So, what are your goals when it comes to relationships? Often "Better Communication" is identified as a top priority, but is that really what you want?
Goal setting begins with thoughtful consideration of what you most want to achieve, and becomes even more effective if you make them fun. When structured well, your goals can provide motivation, focus, and accountability.
"Better Communication" isn’t a good goal because it's definitely not specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, nor time-bound (SMART) nor does it connect with what you really want and need.
Communication isn’t a goal at all—It’s a tool to accomplish something bigger: What You deeply desire is stronger, engaged relationships.
Connections with people who know you, trust you, listen to you, share with you, converse with you, and so on.
Three areas of relationship that are most valuable to your career and your legacy:
- Relationships with Colleagues--the culture of engagement within your organization
- Relationships with Clients--the continuum of engagement with those in your target market
- Relationships with Communities--the contribution you deliver to societal good
